5 miles |
1:03:30 |
Ran in shorts and light jacket -
40 degrees out. 1st mile was 11:17. Ate two Clif bars about an hour before

hours as per plan). |
5 |
|
Sat - 12/13/03 |
11 miles |
2:30 |
36 degrees, ran in light jacket
and shorts. Was okay but fingers got cold! Had energy gel at 6 miles with

food.) 4.4 MPH average, 13.6 minute miles on average. |

2.4 |
|
Wed - 12/17/03 |
2.4 miles |
30 minutes |
33 degrees - wore a rugby jersey
and a light jacket, too warm. And too warm in lined sweat pants. Buy lighter

Sun - 12/21/03 |
2.7 mile walk |

|
Thurs - 1/1/04 |
About 1.5 mile walk |
32 minutes |
Listened to Myaskovsky's 21st
and the Blue Hawaiians. |
|
Sat - 1/3/04 |
15 miles |
3:10 |
12.6 min/mile; 4.7 mph average.
(I ran flatter miles than last time.) My first couple of miles were awful -
very negative thinking, but then things got better at mile three or so. I'm
beginning to see a pattern: by mile 7 I'm in very good shape, and then I get
dozey and forgetful at about mile ten. I then get a kind of second wind by
mile 11-12. By then my upper legs start to get sore. When I started it was 47
degrees and when I ended it was nearly ten degrees warmer. Ran in a
tee-shirt; had Gatorade and a PowerBar. |
15 |
|
Sun - 1/4/04 |
About 1.5 mile walk |
30 minutes |
Listened to Tchaikovsky's String

3.5 |
|
Wed - 1/7/04 |
2.4 mile run |
30 minutes |
Clear, full moon, 25 degrees.
Wore padded sweat pants and rugby jersey under light jacket - felt fine

|
2.4 |

About 1.5 mile walk |
30 minutes |
23 degrees and breezy - too
cold! Tchaikovsky's String Quartet #2 |
|
Sun - 1/11/04 |
6 mile run |
1:14 |
32 degrees during the day; wore
gloves. Too cold to run the day before - 14 degrees. Cold snap! |

WEEK 9 |
12.1 miles run |
|
|
|
|
Mon - 1/12/04 |
About 1.5 mile walk |

|
Tues - 1/13/04 |

30 min |
35 degrees, windy. |
|
2.4 |
|
Sat - 1/17/04 |
17 mile run |
3:44:50 |
(4.5 mph average, 13.23 minutes
per mile, average.) Cold - it was 26 degrees when I started and 36 when I
finished. Really dragging after mile 13 or so. The miles prior to that were
okay and uneventful. |
17 |
|
WEEK 10 |
19.4 miles run |
|
|
|
|
Mon - 1/19/04 |
3.5 mile run |
45 mins |
26 degrees at night feels a lot
colder than 26 degrees in daylight! Wore gloves and wooly cap. Breezy. Very
relaxing run - after running 3 hours 45 minutes two days earlier… |
|
3.5 |
|
Tues - 1/20/04 |
About 1.5 mile walk |
26 mins |
26 degrees and windy - I was
underdressed for it. So - I froze, listened to Frank Sinatra on a CD and
watched the idiot neighbors get visited by three Fairfax County squad cars. |
|
Weds - 1/21/04 |
3.6 miles run |
45 mins |
25 degrees. That wooly cap makes
all the difference. Daydreamed about marathons. |
|
3.6 |
|
Sat - 1/24/04 |
8 mile run |
1:39 |
(4.8 mph average, 12.3 minutes
per mile.) An easy run. 26 degrees. Snow flurries. I think Tom Loesel passed
me. Verified new 3 mile course. Note to self: wear Gel-Cumulus V's rather
than IV's for anything over about 8 miles. (They fit better.) |
|
8 |
|
Sun - 1/25/04 |
Stationary cycle |
30 mins |
3" of snow was falling
outside… |
|
WEEK 11 |
15.1 miles run |
|
|
|
|
Mon - 1/26/04 |
About 1.5 mile walk |
30 mins |
5" of snow total. All my
jogging routes are snowed over. Bummer. |
|
Wed - 1/28/04 |
stationary cycle |
45 minutes |
Snow and ice everywhere! |
|
Sat - 1/31/04 |
13.1 miles |
Not sure! |
Snow and ice everywhere, still,
so I did my miles on a treadmill at the South Run Rec Center. Not a wholly
good experience as I sometimes had to run in 30 minutes segments while people
waited to use the treadmills. Still… it was better than nothing. I was
supposed to run 15 miles but got a call from two rugby pals to meet for lunch
- so I blew off the last two miles. (Priorities.) It's cool; I'm somewhat
ahead of schedule for a 2 May marathon. |
13 |
|
WEEK 12 |
13.1 miles run |
|
|
|
|
Mon - 2/2/04 |
2.5 miles run |
30 mins |
33 degrees - I was okay in
shorts but didn't wear gloves. Mistake. Moonlight on the snow… I had to find
dry pavement to run on, but some was available. |
|
2.5 |
|
Wed - 2/4/04 |
2.4 mile run |
30 min |
It was so icy on the streets
last night I couldn't even walk - and tonight's run was crappy in that I had
to jog slowly and carefully because of black ice. Looking forward to better
marathon training weather… |
|
Sat - 2/7/04 |
7 mile run |
1 1/2 hours |
Run on a treadmill at South Run.
Hot and sweaty; I'm not used to running when it's warm. |
|
7 |
|
Sun - 2/8/04 |
About 1.5 mile walk |
30 min |
Listened to Tchaikovsky's string
quartet #1. Snow and ice are disappearing… |
|
WEEK 13 |
11.9 miles run |
|
|
163 |
41.9 |
|
Mon - 2/9/04 |
3.6 mile run |
45 minutes |
46 degrees, only patches of ice
and snow. Wonderful - but my feet hurt a little. |
|
3.6 |
|
Wed - 2/11/04 |
2.5 miles run |
30 minutes |
Left small toe hurt! What's with
the fit on my second pair of shoes? |
|
2.5 |
|
Thurs - 2/12/04 |
About 1.5 mile walk |
30 minutes |
At South Run while WSRFC
was at practice. |
|
Sat - 2/14/04 |
19 mile run |
4:04 |
It was suprisingly easy, as long
runs go. I had a second wind at 16 miles that enabled me to go another three.
I probably could have made 20. I guess it was the carbo-loading the night
before and the break due to ice. All this and my pace picked up: 4.75
mile/hour average, 12.6 minutes per mile, average. Weather: 35 when I
started, about 45-50 when I finished. |
19 |
|
Sun - 2/15/04 |
About 1.5 mile walk |
30 minutes |
Listened to "Body
Heat" soundtrack. John Barry rules. |
|
2.3 |
|
WEEK 14 |
25.1 miles run |
|
|
182 |
50.3 |
|
Mon - 2/16/04 |
6.5 miles pedaled |
38 min cycle |
It was pretty cold outside, so I
lazily stayed indoors and cycled on a stationary bike, watching a horrible
Star Trek documentary. |
|
Tues - 2/17/04 |
2.4 miles run |
30 minutes |
Ran after a big Silver Diner
meal - bad idea. Felt like a jogging, bloated whale. My wife brought home a
copy of "Runner's World" - which I don't really feel like I've
entered, yet. |
2.4 |
|
Sat - 2/21/04 |
8 mile run |
1:35 |
Average pace: 11:52 min/mile,
first mile: 10:58. Quick! (For me.) Sunny, 65 degrees, breezy. |
8 |
|
Sun - 2/22/04 |
2 mile walk |
30 minutes |
Depressed
and tired, I sort of slept-walked though this one. |
|
WEEK 15 |
10.4 miles run |
|
|
192.4 |
50.3 |
|
Mon - 2/23/04 |
3 mile run |
35:32:00 |
Average pace: 11.5 min/mile (5.2
mph), best mile was the 3rd - 11:03 minutes (I sprinted the last hundred
yards or so.) My left toe hurts from my second pair of running shoes… |
|
3 |
|
Tues - 2/24/04 |
2 mile walk |
30 minutes |
Listened to Tchaikovsky's 1st
string quartet again. I'm beginning to like that piece. |
|
Wed - 2/25/04 |
2.5 mile run |
30 minutes |
11 minute first mile. Wore my
WSRFC training top for the first time. I think I'll run the marathon wearing
it. |
|
2.5 |
|
Sat - 2/28/04 |
9 mile run |
1:44 |
Average
pace: 11:34 min/mile (5.3 mph). My best mile was my first at 10:35 (a new
record for me) My slowest mile was my six at 12:01, when I stopped to pee -
so my pace is certainly improving. Best of all, my blood pressure is back to
normal. |
9 |
|
Sun - 2/29/04 |
About 1.5 mile walk |
30 minutes |
Listened to Burt Bacharach
"Reach Out." Reminded me of L.A. |
|
WEEK 16 |
14.5 miles run |
|
|
201.4 |
55.8 |
|
Mon - 3/1/04 |
2.4 mile run |
30 minutes |
Ran in a tee-shirt; 58 degrees
felt warm! |
2.4 |
|
Wed - 3/3/04 |
2.4 mile run |
30 minutes |
59 degrees. Saw a vee of geese
flying northwards. Spring is here! |
|
2.4 |
|
Thurs - 3/4/04 |
About 1.5 mile walk |
30 minutes |
Listened to the Blue Hawaiians'
"Sway." I wish this band would tour. |
|
Sat - 3/6/04 |
10 miles |
I don't know! |
It was raining when I woke up,
so I tried to run my scheduled 20 miles on the treadmill at South Run. (I
didn't want to soak my shoes and risk blisters running in the rain. Also,
part of my path gets muddy.) It was too hot and too boring on the treadmill,
so I ran only 10 miles and will plan to run 21 this next Saturday. A reverse,
but not an unrecoverable one. I just need to pick up another seven miles in
eight weeks. Since most marathon training schedules top out at about 20-21
miles before the race (mine doesn't - I run 24-25 miles), I should be okay. |
10 |
|
Sun - 3/7/04 |
Stationary cycle |
20 minutes |
I was going to walk but it was
pouring rain outside. |
|
WEEK 17 |
14.8 miles run |
|
|
213.8 |
58.2 |
|
Mon - 3/8/04 |
2.4 miles run |
30 minutes |
Felt weak and weary. I think I
may be getting a cold or something. |
|
2.4 |
|
Tues - 3/9/04 |
1.5 mile walk |
30 minutes |
Listened to Tchaikovsky's 2nd
string quartet. Really getting hooked on that "sound." |
|
Wed - 3/10/04 |
2.4 miles run |
30 minutes |
A nice, brisk run on a cold
evening. I psyched myself up for this Saturday's long run by visiting Metro
Run and Walk and buying gel packets. (Just as I used to psych myself for
rugby by watching televised matches.) |
|
2.4 |
|
Thurs - 3/11/04 |
1.5 mile walk |
30 minutes |
Listened to the Beatles
Anthology. I am now convinced that Paul McCartney was the world's greatest
bassist. |
|
Sat - 3/13/04 |
21 mile run |
4:25 |
35 degrees when I started and 50
when I finished. Averaged 12:33 min per mile (4.9 mph). Mile 1 in 11:15; mile
2 in 11:52; mile 3 in 12:23; mile 4 in 12:12; mile 5 in 12:04; mile 6 in
11:44; mile 7 in 12:17; mile 8 in 11:17; mile 9 in 11:45; mile 10 in 12:17;
mile 11 in 12:04; mile 12 in 11:34; mile 13 in 12:13; mile 14 in 12:36; mile
15 in 13:26; mile 16 in 13:08; mile 17 in 13:28; mile 18 in 14:12; mile 19 in
14:06; mile 20 13:34; mile 21 was just over 14 minutes. The first 13 miles or
so were fine - and then I got into trouble around mile 15: the right side of
my right knee started to ache. The last six miles were rather slow and
painful and I was taking two minute walk breaks in an effort to rest my knee
to be able to keep going. I'm now limping... not a relatively easy and fun
run like the 19 miler - but at least I don't do it again for another three
weeks! (21 miles is just over 80% of a marathon.) However, I now believe I
can finish a marathon as I'm within five miles of completion. |
21 |
|
WEEK 18 |
25.8 miles run |
|
|
234.8 |
63 |
|
Mon - 3/15/04 |
1.5 mile walk |
30 minutes |
Knee seemed okay. Listened to
Lalo's boring "Symphony Espagnol." |
|
Wed - 3/17/04 |
1 mile run |
12 minutes |
At
the end of the first mile my knee had a little bit of pain, so that and wet
snowflakes convinced me to call it a night. |
|
1 |
|
Thur - 3/19/04 |
2 mile run |
25 minutes |
Uh-oh. My knee
started hurting after two miles. |
|
2 |
|
Sat - 3/20/04 |
5 mile run |
1 hour |
Average: 12:05/mile; mile 1 in
11:27; mile 2 in 12:05; mile 3 in 12:22; mile 4 in 12:03; mile 5 in 12:28. I
had told myself that I would run a minimum of 5 miles and 8 if my knee didn't
hurt. At about mile 3 it began to hurt, and by mile 4 it felt like a dull
pressing against the right side of my right knee. So... no running this week,
just walks. I have to let this thing heal while I have time before the
marathon. |
|
Sun - 3/21/04 |
2.75 mile walk |
45 minutes |
Listened to Nat King Cole. No
better voice in American pop music. From the sublime to the disgusting: a
left toe is turning purple under the nail, probably a result of the last long
run. I'll probably lose the nail - which I shall consecrate to Philippides. |
|
WEEK 19 |
8 miles run |
|
|
234.8 |
66 |
|
Mon - 3/22/04 |
2 mile walk |
30 minutes |
Walked around in the dark
listening to the Twin Peaks
incidental music - a decidedly weird experience. |
|
Tues - 3/23/04 |
2 mile walk |
30 minutes |
More Twin
Peaks. I really feel like running, not walking. |
|
Thurs - 3/25/04 |
3 mile run |
38 minutes |
Feeling lazy, listless and unfit
I decided to run tonight despite my resolution to take a week off. It was
warm, spring was in the air and it reminded me of a similar night in 1972,
when I was only sixteen and the world was young. Anyway, no knee problems.
Average: 12:43 mins/mile. |
|
3 |
|
Sat - 3/27/04 |
8 mile run |
1:40 |
Average: 12:32/mile; mile 1 in
11:20; mile 2 in 12:10; mile 3 in 12:49; mile 4 in 12:54; mile 5 in 12:37;
mile 6 in 12:41; mile 7 in 12:58; mile 8 in 12:47. I wrapped my knee, but I
don't know if it helped. (It didn't seem to hurt any.) At about mile 6 the
side of my knee began to hurt, and by mile 8 it was pretty sore. This
presents a problem in that next week was supposed to be a 20+ mile long run.
I'll do another 8 miler instead and then do the long run the following week,
when the schedule calls for a 24-26 mile run. (This is the last 20+ mile run
before the marathon.) Without knee pain I know I can finish a marathon - with
knee pain it won't be any fun at all. |

Sun - 3/28/04 |
2 mile walk |
30 minutes |
The batteries on my CD player
gave out half-way through a Blue Oyster Cult song. Bummer. Also, my knee
problem has a name: ITB Syndrome. Since it's caused by the iliotibial band
rubbing against bone, wearing an Ace bandage and thereby pressing the muscle
to the bone was probably a bad idea! |

Mon - 3/29/04 |
2.4 mile run |

Some
tightness in the knee but no pain. Still… I'm worried. |

30 minutes |
Up and down a retail district in
Richardson, Texas (business trip). |

Thurs - 4/1/04 |
2.5 mile run |

Started raining. A little
tightness in the knee and more worry. |

Sat - 4/3/04 |
2 mile walk |
30 minutes |
Listened to the Three Penny
Opera. |
|
Sun - 04/04/04 |
5 mile run |
1 hour |
Ran at the track at West
Springfield High School in an effort to find a flat, dry surface. The knee
pain began at about four miles and was pretty bad at mile 5, which tells me
that it isn't improving much. In fact, it seems to be getting worse. So.. no
more fooling around on my own - I'm seeing a doctor about it. With only a
month before the marathon, I am not optimistic about being able to finish.
Failure and defeat are in the air... |

Wed - 4/7/04 |
5 mile run |
1 hour, 1 minute |
I didn't run on Monday and
Tuesday because I was installing a new stereo! Tonight was much better than
Sunday's run. I went to see the doctor and, after some prodding and tugging
on his part, got a diagnosis of a torn meniscus rather than an ITB strain. (They
don't heal.) He gave me a prescription for Voltaren, an anti-inflammatory,
advice to wear a knee brace when running (and not) and to ice up the knee
after running - or whenever. One or more or all of these seemed to help. He
said I could try running... so we'll see. While I felt some pain, it was
manageable. Not sure how longer distances will be. Average: 12:15/mile. Hope
and optimism make a cautious return. |

|
Sat - 4/10/04 |
16 mile run |
3 hours, 26 mins |
Despite summoning up all the
will power I had, the best I could do was fifteen miles; the last mile I
walked/limped. At about mile 14 the pain got considerable. I suppose coming
off a flu a day ago didn't help, either. About 12:53 minute miles, average. This
demonstrates to me that I won't be running a marathon in three weeks. I can
run a half-marathon in Frederick, but why bother? I've been running those
since December. I may just call this whole experiment off, run shorter
distances and heal. Damn. |

Tues - 4/13/04 |
2.4 mile run |

Tried Spike's hinged knee brace.
Not bad, but a little snug. |

Wed - 4/14/04 |
2 mile walk |
33 mins |
Listened to
Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs." |
|
Thurs - 4/15/04 |
1 mile run |
13 mins |
Got back late; just ran to try
out knee brace #2, which I borrowed from another rugger. Got a good workout,
though, as I had to push my car a bit to coast down the hill into the garage
(dead battery). |

|
Sat - 4/17/04 |
19 mile run |
4:06 |
Mile 1 in 11:20; Mile 2 in
11:56; Mile 3 in 12:13; Mile 4 in 11:38; Mile 5 in 12:18; Mile 6 in 12:10;
Mile 7 in 12:32; Mile 8 in 12:28; Mile 9 in 12:12; Mile 10 in 12:32; Mile 11
in 13:17; Mile 12 in 12:41; Mile 13 in 13:00; Mile 14 in 13:25; Mile 15 in 13:39;
Mile 16 in 14:18; Mile 17 in 13:59; Mile 18 in 14:29; Mile 19 in 15:43
(walked). Average: 12:56. Every long run is different and this one was no
exception. The brace extended my running a bit - my knee started really
hurting at about mile 16 - but it was hot and I wasn't adequately hydrated.
When I started running it was 45 degrees. When I finished it was 79 degrees!
Had it not been for Meredith bringing out ice water I would have stopped at
mile 16. But... this one was a confidence-builder in that it probably
represents the worst I'll do on the marathon - and I can probably finish in
time (the course closes at 6 hours) based on it. I am cautiously optimistic.
Next time I'll water and carb up! |

Wed - 4/21/04 |
2 mile walk |
30 mins |
71 degrees; listened to my Burt
Bacharach CD. |
|
Thur - 4/22/04 |
2 mile run |
25 mins |
Too warm (79 degrees) and too
much pollen. I didn't wear a knee brace and my knee started hurting at only
two miles. But… this was the last short training run I'll do before the
marathon. |
|
2 |
|
Sun - 4/25/04 |
8 mile run |
1:40 |
My last training run before the
marathon; the knee started hurting at mile 5/6 - not a good sign. This
marathon is going to be painful to complete, I think. Average: 12:30
mins/mile. 1st mile in 12:12; mile 2 in 12:19; mile 3 in 12:31; mile 4 in
12:47; mile 5 in 12:48; mile 6 in 12:46; mile 7 in 12:34; mile 8 in 11:57. |

Listened to Tchaikovsky's 1st
string quartet, which has become the marathon training theme song. |

Sun - 5/2/04 |
MARATHON (26.2 miles) |
My watch: 6 hours, 2 minutes, 58
seconds (Official time was 6:10.48) |
13.8 minutes/mile, average. 1st
mile in 10:55; 2nd mile in 11:38; 3rd mile in 12:05; 4th mile in 12:29; 5th
mile in 13:09; 6th mile in 12:17; 7th mile in 12:36; 8th mile in 12:44; 9th
mile in 13:11; 10th mile in 12:56; 11th mile in 13:21; 12th mile in 13:11;
13th mile in 13:16; 14th mile in 13:49; 15th mile in 13:51; 16th mile in
about 14:00 (went foggy, there); 17th mile in 14:31; 18th mile in 15:46; 19th
mile in 15:11; 20th mile in 15:52; 21st mile in 16:42; 22nd mile in 16:33;
23rd mile in 16:30; 24th mile in 16:21; 25th mile in 16:27; 26th mile in
11:19 (I ran, but not that fast!); last .2 mile in 2:12. A humid day, which
took a lot out of me. Also - this course was considerably less flat than I
was led to believe! Kelly Watkins, who ran the Marine Corps Marathon and
kindly paced me for some distances in this, tells me this is hillier. I
started to get dopey at about mile 17, and by mile 18, when the clouds parted
and the sun came broiling down, I was reduced to walking because of my knee.
I walked from then on out with a fellow named Rob who couldn't run due to an
ITB strain. Thank goodness it's over. |
